Te Fare Tauhiti Nui created Hura Tapairu in 2004 with eight groups. By 2023 it had 36 groups in competition. It has become a stepping stone to the Heiva, and in 2017 the Manihini contest was added for foreign groups.

About Hura Tapairu
A November and December Tahitian dance contest at Papeete's Maison de la Culture, a stepping stone to the Heiva.
Hura Tapairu is a traditional Tahitian dance contest held at the Grand Theatre of the Maison de la Culture in Papeete. Created in 2004 by Te Fare Tauhiti Nui, it gives smaller dance groups freedom of theme, choreography, songs and costumes. It grew from eight groups in 2004 to 36 in 2023. A separate Manihini contest hosts groups from outside Polynesia.
