Setsubun grew out of tsuina, a Chinese custom to ward off evil spirits that reached Japan in the 8th century and was first held there in 706. The bean-throwing seen today began in the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573). The custom of eating ehomaki began in the geisha districts between the Edo and Meiji periods.

Japan's bean-throwing festival on the eve of spring: shout 'Oni wa soto!' at Tokyo temples and shrines.
Setsubun marks the day before spring in the old calendar. People throw roasted beans to drive out demons, shouting 'Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!' ('Devils out, happiness in'), then eat one bean for each year of their age. Tokyo temples such as Zojo-ji hold public ceremonies, and shops sell ehomaki, a giant uncut sushi roll eaten in silence. It is not a public holiday, and the date can fall on February 2, 3 or 4.
