The anniversary of the first apparition draws the largest pilgrimage of the year to Fátima on May 12 and 13, with a candlelight procession on the night of the 12th and the farewell of the statue at midday on the 13th. Many walk from across Portugal along the roadsides in the days before. The esplanade holds the crowd easily, but the roads into town do not.
