History of Festa di San Marco (Festa del Bocolo)
The feast marks the anniversary of the death of St. Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of Venice. His relics were brought to Venice from Alexandria in 828 by two Venetian merchants, hidden under a cargo of pork. The winged lion became the emblem of Venice. The rosebud custom comes from a legend of Maria, daughter of a Doge, and a young man of low birth named Tancredi.
