The name Lucia comes from the Latin lux, meaning light. The custom of a white-clad Lucia bringing morning greetings began in the late 18th century, when she had angel wings. She took her current form around 1900, and after the First World War Lucia processions became increasingly common in Sweden. The Lucia song comes from Italy and was given Swedish lyrics in the 1920s.

Luciadagen is Sweden's festival of light: in every church, school and office a Lucia in a crown of burning candles leads a procession of singers in white with Sankta Lucia and the old carols, in the dark before dawn or at dusk. In Stockholm the concerts at Storkyrkan in the old town, Skansen's open-air museum and the Globe are the ones to book. Saffron buns and glögg are served after, and the city is lit up for Christmas.
