In March, O'Hare International Airport (ORD) transitions from winter operations to spring travel patterns. Expect a mix of winter weather impacts early in the month and higher passenger volumes later due to spring break. ORD serves travelers from Chicago, Naperville, Evanston, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis connecting to major Sun Belt destinations including Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is a major hub for visitors to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and surrounding destinations like Sedona and the Grand Canyon. March brings warm sunny days and a steady influx of visitors for MLB Spring Training and early spring travel, making it a high-demand month for flights from O'Hare International Airport (ORD).
Key March events that influence travel demand for ORD→PHX include MLB Spring Training (Cactus League) across Phoenix and Scottsdale, which draws large crowds and elevates hotel and car rental prices. St. Patrick's Day festivities and local food/wine events also increase weekend travel. If you're attending games or festivals, book flights and accommodations early — aim to purchase at least 6–8 weeks before peak event weekends. For flexible travelers, target non-event weekdays to save on March fares and avoid ground-transport congestion.
The best time to fly from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) in March is early in the month on Tuesday–Thursday mornings. These midweek windows typically offer lower fares and fewer spring-break crowds. If flexibility is limited, choose early-morning nonstops for the highest on-time percentage. Avoid peak spring-break weekends and major Cactus League game days to reduce costs and ground-transport delays.
Nonstop flights from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) are the fastest and most convenient option for March travel, typically under four hours door-to-door. Connecting flights via hubs like Denver (DEN) or Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) can be cheaper but increase total travel time and risk of missed connections if weather disrupts operations at ORD in early March. Choose nonstop for reliability and faster transfers; opt for a connecting itinerary only when the price difference justifies added travel time and you allow generous layovers. Book refundable or protected connections if traveling during early-March weather windows.
