The tradition traces back to the Kyoho famine of 1732, when fireworks were launched at festivals for the dead. Rival guilds Tamaya and Kagiya made the show a competition in the Edo period. The festival stopped in the 1920s and during World War II, and it was reinstated in 1978.

The festival draws nearly 1 million visitors each year.
Take the train. Asakusa, Honjo-Azumabashi, Kuramae and Tokyo Skytree stations are within walking distance of the main viewing areas, and many roads close.
In 2018 the festival was moved to the next day (Sunday) because of bad weather from Typhoon Jongdari.
