About Split Carnival

Masks, a city-key handover and the burning of the Krnje effigy fill Split's old town before Lent.

Split's carnival, known locally as the Krnjeval, opens on Pjaca square with the mayor handing the keys of the city to the masqueraders. Groups in handmade masks and costumes take over the old town for about ten days. It ends around Shrove Tuesday with the trial and burning of the Krnje, an effigy of the past year's troubles. The dates follow Easter, so they shift each year.
