History of Leeds West Indian Carnival
The carnival started in 1967 as an antidote to the yearning for Caribbean culture and heritage felt by a group of West Indian students in Leeds. It is billed as the first to feature all three essential elements of Caribbean carnival: costumes, music and a masquerade procession. 2017 was its 50th anniversary.

Leeds West Indian Carnival started in 1967 and is billed as Europe's longest-running authentic Caribbean carnival. On the last Monday in August a parade of costumes, music and masqueraders leaves Potternewton Park and winds through Chapeltown and Harehills. Crowds have been estimated at 100,000 to 160,000. Pre-carnival events run in the weeks before.
