History of Saranac Lake Winter Carnival
The carnival traces its roots to a one-day Winter Carnival held in 1897 by the Pontiac Club. It was created to lift morale in a village that had become a tuberculosis treatment center, where patients were told to rest. The first Ice Tower was built using the skills of the local ice trade, and the original tower has grown into a palace made from the frozen waters of Lake Flower.
