Dominica's Carnival began with enslaved people celebrating freedom through costume, music and dance. Freed people marked emancipation with street masquerade to tambou drums, shack-shacks and boom booms, a custom that survives in today's Lapo Kabwit bands. Bouyon, created in the late 1980s by the band WCK, has become the sound of the road.

It is centered on Roseau, the capital, with village carnivals across the island in the weeks before.
Yes. Both Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday are public holidays in Dominica.
J'Ouvert starts from about 4:00 AM in Roseau. Lapo Kabwit drum bands lead, then hi-fi bands take over at sunrise.
Dominicans use the name because the island has kept old customs that other carnivals let go. Traditional masquerade leads the road rather than decorating its edges.
Canefield Airport (DCF), 3 km from Roseau, handles smaller regional connections via SVG Air. Other travelers connect from elsewhere in the Caribbean or North America.

Mas Domnik, "The Real Mas": dawn J'Ouvert, drums and traditional masquerade on the streets of Roseau.
Dominica's Carnival is called Mas Domnik, and islanders call it "The Real Mas" because it keeps old customs. The season builds over about a month, with village carnivals, calypso tents and pageants. It ends on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, the two days before Ash Wednesday, when J'Ouvert starts before dawn and costume bands fill Roseau. Both days are public holidays, so book flights and rooms early.
