Altars, or ofrendas, are built in homes to honor loved ones who have died. Each includes the four elements: water, wind, earth and fire.
Water is left in a pitcher for the spirits, papel picado represents the wind, food and bread represent earth, and candles represent fire.
Cempasúchitl, or marigolds, are used on altars and graves. They come in orange and purple.
Monarchs are believed to hold the spirits of the departed, and the first ones arrive in Mexico each fall on November 1.
