December is a peak travel month between San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) due to holiday travel and cultural events. Expect higher demand, earlier sell-outs on nonstop flights, and elevated fares in the second half of December. San Jose departures commonly serve travelers from San Jose, Santa Clara, Cupertino, Palo Alto and San Francisco who are heading to Mexico City for family visits, holiday markets and seasonal festivals. For best fares, search and book 6–10 weeks ahead and consider midweek departures to Mexico City to find lower prices. Pack layers for Mexico City’s cool evenings and book airport transport in advance — popular neighborhoods like Centro Histórico, Polanco, Condesa and Coyoacán fill quickly during holiday weeks.
Arriving at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) in December places you in the middle of vibrant holiday festivities like Las Posadas, local Christmas markets, and the December 12 celebrations for Our Lady of Guadalupe earlier in the month. Expect busy immigration and taxi ranks, especially during the weeks around Christmas and New Year. From MEX you can quickly reach top neighborhoods including Polanco, Roma-Condesa, Centro Histórico and Coyoacán, and use MEX as a gateway for day trips to Toluca, Puebla and Querétaro. Book transfers and accommodations early, exchange a small amount of pesos at the airport for immediate expenses, and use official taxi stands or registered ride apps for safe travel into the city.
December in Mexico City features traditional celebrations like Las Posadas (processions and neighborhood festivities), Christmas markets in Coyoacán and around the Centro Histórico, and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12) which draws pilgrims to the Basilica. Streets and major avenues like Paseo de la Reforma are often decorated with light displays and seasonal installations, making walking tours and night-time excursions popular. If you plan day trips from Mexico City International Airport (MEX), Puebla offers its own Christmas crafts and culinary experiences, while Toluca and Querétaro host festive markets and cultural events.
The best time to fly from San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) in December is early in the month (first two weeks) or midweek departures (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) to avoid peak holiday crowds and higher fares. Early morning flights tend to be less prone to delays — choose a non-peak hour departure for smoother travel.
