About Semana Criolla del Prado

Uruguay spends Holy Week watching gauchos ride bucking horses and grilling half a cow.

For a week around Easter the Rural del Prado grounds host jineteadas, the gaucho rodeo where riders try to stay on untamed horses, alongside folk music stages, payadores and enormous asados. The final weekend has the championship rides and the biggest crowds. It is a family event, cheap to enter, and the food is the point as much as the riding.

Know before you go

Uruguay calls it Semana de Turismo; beach towns are busy too.
Afternoons are hot and dusty; the evening shows are gentler.
The Prado is a thirty minute taxi from Carrasco airport and a short bus ride from the centre of Montevideo.
