From 1645 to 1934 the slope was the Jewish cemetery of Rome's community. In 1950 the city made it a rose garden, replacing the original on Colle Oppio, and the paths of one area were designed in the shape of a menorah, visible only from above. The Rome Prize for new rose varieties started in 1933 and is the second oldest in the world, after the Bagatelle Prize.
