The Monsignor Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre organizes Creole Heritage Month and times its finale to International Creole Day, marked on October 28 by Creole-speaking communities since 1983. The month honors the language, music, dance, food and dress that grew from Saint Lucia's African and French roots. English is the official language, but Kwéyòl lives on in everyday conversation, proverbs and song.

Jounen Kwéyòl is held on the last Sunday of October. In 2026 it was Sunday, October 25.
It is a month, held in October, that honors Saint Lucia's Kwéyòl language, music, dance, food and dress. The Folk Research Centre organizes it, and Jounen Kwéyòl closes it.
Jounen Kwéyòl, or Creole Day, is Saint Lucia's national celebration of its Kwéyòl language and Creole culture. It is held on the last Sunday of October.
Madras, a bright checked fabric, is traditional, and one piece such as a shirt, scarf or head tie is enough. Many women choose the Wob Dwiyet, the national dress.
Look for green fig and saltfish, the national dish, alongside callaloo soup, golden accra (saltfish fritters) and fresh bakes from community stalls.
International Creole Day is marked on October 28.

A month honoring Kwéyòl language and culture in Saint Lucia, closing with Creole Day: madras, folk songs and green fig and saltfish.
Creole Heritage Month fills October in Saint Lucia with walks, pageants and community events. It ends with Jounen Kwéyòl on the last Sunday of the month. Before sunrise the first drums sound and the island steps out in madras. Playing fields fill with folk songs, games, storytelling and long tables of green fig and saltfish. The practical catch is that October is in the Atlantic hurricane season.
